Charles Landry - 'Rethinking Adelaide'

Residency dates 2003 were 2 - 27 June, 18 August - 12 September and 20 October - 14 November.

Charles Landry is a world-leading expert in urban renewal and development. His appointments concentrated on:

  •   helping Adelaide unlock its creative potential.
  •   enhancing understanding of why creativity is so important in achieving social and   economic progress.
  •   developing new connections between the city and the northern suburbs.
  •   the role of culture in building stronger and more cohesive communities.

About Charles Landry

Charles Landry is regarded as an international authority on city futures and the use of culture in city revitalization; cultural planning and heritage, strategic policy development, and the cultural industries.

He founded Comedia, Europe’s leading cultural planning organisation, in 1978. Comedia has undertaken several hundred projects concerned with city and regional strategies for revitalising public, social and economic life through cultural activities.

He recently advised the World Bank in Washington on its strategy for culture and cities world-wide. He now works for the World Bank on special assignments. His book ‘The Creative City: A toolkit for urban innovators,’ was published in May 2000 to widespread acclaim. He has lectured widely in Europe, the USA, Australia and Africa and has presented over 90 keynote addresses on diverse topics associated with cultural revitalisation and public life.

Charles Landry - Program in Adelaide

The program for Charles Landry as a Thinker in Residence was developed by the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the following partners:-

  •  Adelaide City Council
  •  City of Playford
  •  Capital City Committee
  •  Department of Business Manufacturing and Trade
  •  Office for the Southern Suburbs 
  •  Property Council of SA
  •  University of South Australia

The outcomes from the residency were:-

  • an increased awareness of the role of culture and creativity among decision-makers in business, creative industries and all levels of government.
  • a greater understanding of the relative creative strengths of Adelaide in relation to the rest of the world.
  • stronger creative partnerships between cities at the edge and the central city.
  • a clear articulation of the challenges facing Adelaide in becoming a truly creative community
  • a set of strategies that can be implemented to address those challenges
  • an agreed five year program of performance and review

Charles Landry and Herbert Girardet are both experts in key aspects of city life. Their appointments were timed to coincide, so that they could collaborate in the development of an integrated vision for the future of Adelaide. The event ‘What Makes Great Cities?’ on 12 June featured both Charles and Herbert.
