Herbert Girardet - 'Making Adelaide a Green City'
Residency dates were May 20 - July 14, 2003.
Herbert Girardet, a world-leading urban ecologist, was the inaugural Adelaide Thinker in Residence.
Herbert's appointment concentrated on assisting Adelaide to become a green city and a more sustainable community.
During his eight-week visit Herbert:
- interacted and worked with a broad spectrum of people, not just those actively engaged in the environment.
- exchanged ideas around sustainability.
- stimulated creative solutions to Adelaide's sustainability issues.
His program included a Public Lecture held on Tuesday 27 May 2003
This lecture, 'Making Adelaide a Green City', highlighted the key achievements and the challenges for Adelaide in energy, water, waste and greening. The lecture was jointly presented by Adelaide Thinkers in Residence and the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, UniSA.

About Herbert Girardet
Herbert Girardet is a specialist in making cities sustainable. He is widely published, a prolific documentary maker and has been invited to work on sustainability in many countries around the world.
Herbert is the recipient of the UN Global 500 Award for Outstanding Environmental Achievement, an honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and Chair of the UK Sustainability Alliance and Schumacher Society.

Herbert Girardet - Program in Adelaide
The program for Herbert Girardet as a Thinker in Residence was developed by the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the following partners and sponsors:-
- Department for Environment and Heritage - Office of Sustainability
- Department of Transport and Urban Planning
- Capital City Committee
- Adelaide City Council
- The Body Shop
During the residence, Herbert assisted in the development of Adelaide as an internationally renowned green city.
Herbert's work included:
1. The development of a report on how Adelaide can distinguish itself as a green city. The report will comment on:
- sustainability initiatives where Adelaide either leads or lags in international terms.
- our planning system at the local and State level.
- what baseline data is required to develop a meaningful ecological footprint and the best method for gathering and analysing it.
- policy and legislative changes which can be made to increase liveability and sustainability within the City of Adelaide.
- realistic targets both short term and long term for Adelaide.
- ideas for engaging the broader community in a vision for a green city.

2. Engaging the local community in discussions about sustainability, and challenging and inspiring both individuals and organisations to take action on sustainability issues. This was done through public lectures, conferences and workshops.
Outcomes from the Residency:-
- a framework within which Adelaide can distinguish itself as an internationally recognised green city.
- reinforcement of partnerships through engagement of the community and key stakeholders in the Green City initiative.
- incorporation of Adelaide as a case study in Mr Girardet's forthcoming book 'Creating Liveable and Sustainable Cities'.
