Ilona Kickbusch – Healthy Societies
Professor Ilona Kickbusch PhD is known throughout the world for her contributions to innovation in public health, health promotion and global health.
Ilona lived and work in South Australia as an Adelaide Thinker
in Residence in two stages:
5 February to 16 March 2007
17 October to 27 November 2007
During her time in Adelaide, Ilona:
- Demonstrated the central role that health plays in the economies
and social life of twenty-first century societies and highlight
the implications of this for the development of South Australia.
- Identified South Australia’s current and potential strengths
that have an impact on the social and economic determinants
of health, well-being and health inequities, and identify strategies
to increase the effectiveness of these actions at the local,
national and international level.
- Increased awareness and understanding among government, non-government,
business and community stakeholders of the significance of addressing
the social and economic determinants of health, well being and
health inequities.
- Further developed effective and measurable strategies to achieve
the health related goals and targets in South Australia’s
Strategic Plan, with a focus on applying existing knowledge
and enabling community engagement in the process.
- Provided guidance on future research directions for the State
bearing in mind South Australia’s health related goals
and targets and existing research strengths.

About Ilona Kickbusch
Professor Kickusch has had a distinguished career with the World Health Organisation where she initiated a range of innovative world-wide programs such as Healthy Cities and Health Promoting Schools. As Director of Communication at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, she oversaw the planning for World Health Days and the World Health Reports.
At Yale University Ilona headed the division of Global Health where she contributed significantly to shaping the new field of global health with a focus on global health governance.
She has published and lectured widely on the new public health and is a member of many professional organisations, editorial boards and advisory groups. She is the founder and chair of the editorial board of the journal Health Promotion International, and has received numerous honours and awards for her achievements.
Ilona now works as an independent global health consultant based in Switzerland. Kickbusch Health Consult advises international organisations, national governments, non-government organisations and the private sector on new directions and innovations in health governance, public health and health promotion.
She is currently adviser to the Swiss federal government and the World Economic Forum. She is also the senior advisor on Millennium Development Goals and Health Targets to the Pan American Health Organisation.
On health, Dr Kickbusch suggests, “Health is a public good, a global commons, a global resource. It is a process in which we continually strive to move forward. It is a journey of discovery.”
Throughout her career, Dr. Kickbusch has been involved in a wide range of initiatives, aimed at:
- helping to rebuild health programs in countries most disadvantaged,
- recognising the links between poverty, the environment, ways of living, and the reemergence of communicable diseases,
- at educating a new generation in Public Health,
- at promoting policies to help Public Health meet the challenges posed by new advances in genetics, by new security needs in biotechnology and by the right to privacy.

Professor Kickbusch’s residency helped South Australia
formulate new approaches to health, wellbeing and health governance,
recognising that health is a central goal of our society. Ilona’s
professional interests are particularly well-aligned with South
Australia’s strategy for improving wellbeing, growing prosperity
and expanding opportunities. South Australia’s Strategic
Plan has a focus on prevention and on healthier, fitter and safer
individuals and communities.
