About Dr Maire Smith
Dr Smith has an impressive reputation as the founding Chief Executive Officer of Manchester Innovation Ltd - the commercialisation arm of the University of Manchester.
Manchester has achieved strong commercial success through the establishment of a bioscience incubator facility. It has also attracted substantial venture capital funds to the bioscience industry in the Manchester region.
Manchester has similarities to Adelaide and has addressed many of the issues which are now being tackled in South Australia. The similarities include its size in relation to other major cities and its distance from the venture capital companies.
The achievements of Dr Smith and her team in Manchester provided a sound model for South Australia to follow as we consider a bio-science incubator for this State.
With many years experience in various commercial roles with major pharmaceutical companies, Dr Smith has a wealth of commercial and product development experience that South Australia can learn from. Dr Smith's background includes oncology, vaccines, immunology, biotechnology, inflammatory diseases and anti-infectives.
Dr Smith's name is pronounced as Moira.

Dr Maire Smith - Program in Adelaide
The program for Dr Smith as a Thinker in Residence was developed by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, BioInnovation SA and Primary Industries and Resources SA, with input from the bioscience industry.
During her first visit Maire undertook a range of public and industry-related engagements to raise awareness about the importance of bioscience as one of the fastest growing global industries, and the role that incubators play in industry development. This enabled her to build her knowledge of South Australia's bioscience capability and potential, and the opportunities for growth of the industry through the use of incubators.
The period between visits provided Dr Smith with an opportunity to analyse her findings and undertake work in preparation for the final stage of her residency in 2004. The program for the second visit focused on specific development issues for the bioscience industry in South Australia.
The outcomes from the residency were;
- a report on how Adelaide can develop the biosciences industry to meet the Government's goal of increasing investment and jobs for the State
- an increase in the awareness of the role of bioscience incubators in developing South Australia's bioscience industry
- assessment criteria to assess when an incubator is an appropriate vehicle for the commercialisation of bioscience
- advice to industry and Government on the design, development and management of an incubator, a workable model for incubator development and strategies to raise third party capital
