About Peter Cullen

Professor Peter Cullen has worked in the field of natural resource management for over 35 years. He was awarded the Prime Minister's Prize for Environmentalist of the Year in 2001 for his work on the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality.

Peter is a graduate in Agricultural Science from the University of Melbourne and his major professional work has been in the areas of nutrient dynamics, eutrophication, lake ecology and environmental flows. He is a member of the International Water Academy and a Director of both Land and Water Australia and Landcare Australia Limited. Peter was also founding Chief Executive of the Cooperative Research Centre for Freshwater Ecology, where he served from 1993-2002.

Peter is now a Professor Emeritus of the University of Canberra, where he was Dean of Applied Science. He was a member of the Community Advisory Committee of the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council and is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Panel for the Lake Eyre Basin Ministerial Forum.

Peter is known internationally as the leader of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, which is responsible for developing the Blueprint for a Living Continent.

Professor Cullen successfully bridges the gap between science and landholders, an essential pre-requisite to achieving landscape change. Recent thinking in the area of sustainable landscapes has suggested that the key to sustainable management of the landscape lies in social change. Informed land management provides a way forward in addressing the potential decline of future landscapes.

Peter Cullen - Program in Adelaide

The Adelaide Thinkers in Residence program for Professor Cullen was developed by the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the following partners:-

Partners:

Professor Cullen worked closely with the South Australian Government and community to embrace the management of natural resources.

Peter's thoughts and intellectual input in the area of sustainable landscapes will encouraged the exchange of ideas, developed informed thinking and built South Australia's capacity in future landscape management while also assisting in the cultivation of strategic directions for partners.

The broad focus of the residency was water quality and catchment management in the variety of rural landscapes, ranging from deserts in the far north of the State, wet areas of the south-east, as well as the highly stressed landscapes forming the South Australian part of the Murray-Darling Basin. The most critical issue was the health of the River Murray and its importance in the continued viability of the economy and social structure of the state.
