Peter Wintonick – Documentary in the Digital Media Age

Peter Wintonick is an internationally pre-eminent figure in digital documentary media production, recognised for his cutting-edge delivery of compelling documentary content. Peter lived and worked in Adelaide for fourteen weeks, sharing his invaluable knowledge and experience.

The key objectives of Peter's visit were:

  • Contribute to a strategy for the development of South Australia's documentary and broader
    digital content industry
  • provide strategic advice about current and future educational policy, curriculum and pathways
    relating to non-fiction screen media and,
  • strengthen the knowledge, skills and experience of South Australian students and educators in strategies for integrating documentary and digital content creation skills into the school, VET and tertiary education process - and into teacher training - across disciplines and institutions.

Peter was in residence from 24 January until 29 April, 2005.

About Peter Wintonick

Born in 1953, Peter graduated from Algonquin College Film Production Centre, Ottawa. He worked as a university lecturer in Film Studies and Film Theory at Concordia University, Montreal and is a regular guest lecturer at universities around the world.

A world leader on the philosophies and discourse of digital documentary production and ‘web intended’ work, Peter has been a producer, director, critic, media activist and editor of independent film, video and new-media. His work spans a spectrum which includes dramatic features, theatrical documentaries, educational and socio-political works.

Peter was co-founder of one of the first global internet sites for independent film (The Virtual Film Festival). He is most noted for co-producing and directing with Mark Achbar one of the most successful documentaries in Canadian history - Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media - which has played theatrically around the world in 200 cities, won 22 awards in more than 50 international film festivals and has been broadcast in almost 30 markets in a dozen languages. He directed, with the National Film Board of Canada, Cinéma Verité: Defining the Moment, about the Cinéma Verité revolution, and Seeing is Believing: Handicams, Human Rights and The News.

Peter is President of his production company, Necessary Illusions Canada, and holds the position of Producer on the National Film Board of Canada. He regularly contributes to numerous international cinema magazines and is an advisor to a range of events and institutions, including Amsterdam’s IDFA, Montreal New Cinema and New Media Festival, the Berlinale, the One World Festival in Prague and the Buenos
Aires International Film Festival of Independent Film.

Peter Wintonick - Program in Adelaide

Peter Wintonick worked closely with the South Australian Government, public and private organisations and the community to develop policy, statewide strategy, networks and curricula, as well as mentoring young documentary filmmakers with an emphasis on non-fiction screen media production.

His visit was timed to coincide with major film events in South Austraila - the Adelaide Film Festival (AFF), the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) and a number of South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) initiatives and events.
