Stephen Schneider – Climate Change: risks and opportunities

Stephen Schneider is internationally recognised as one of the world's leading experts in atmospheric research and its implications for environment and society. He has helped draw public attention to and their understanding of the increasingly urgent issue of climate change.

Stephen lived and worked in South Australia as an Adelaide Thinker in Residence in three stages in 2006:

3 April to 27 April
15 May to 9 June
10 July to 4 August

The objectives of the residency were to:

  • increase government, industry and community interest and engagement in climage change, including understanding of its causes, impacts, likely implications and possible responses to it
  • support the development of a vision for a low emissions society in South Australia and work with government, commuity and industry on policies and transition pathways to respond to climate change
  • provide advice regarding climate change legislation
  • advise on the finalisation and implementation of draft greenhouse strategy
  • position South Australia as a leader in national climate change science, knowledge, policy development and research

About Stephen Schneider

Stephen Schneider is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Environment Science and Policy of the Institute for International Studies and Professor by Courtesy in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, California.

In 1992, Stephen was honoured with a MacArthur Fellowship for his ability to integrate and interpret the results of global climate research through public lectures, classroom teaching, environmental assessment committees, media appearances, Congressional testimony and research collaboration with colleagues.

Stephen has advised the Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton and Bush Jr administrations and has been awarded the American Association for the Advancement of Science/ Westinghouse Award for Public Understanding of Science and Technology for furthering public understanding of environmental science and its implications for public policy. He was elected to membership in the US National Academy of Sciences in April 2002.     

Stephen founded and is Editor of the interdisciplinary journal, Climate Change, is Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopaedia of Climate and Weather and is author of The Genesis Strategy: Climate and Global Survival; Global Warming: Are We Entering the Greenhouse Century? and Laboratory Earth: The Planetary Gamble We can’t Afford to Lose, amongst others.

Stephen Schneider – Program in Adelaide

Stephen Schneider’s residency provided an opportunity for South Australia to influence national developments in climate change, focusing on pathways to achieve the Government’s long-term emissions targets.

Professor Schneider helped shape strategies, inform policy development and raise awareness of the impact of climate change on South Australia within government, industry, education and the community.
