Who is Ilona Kickbusch
Professor Ilona Kickbusch is one of the world’s leading public health professionals and expert advisors on health promotion, education and the emerging field of global health.
Ilona presently heads the Global Health Programme of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and acts as a senior advisor to the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health.
As an independent global health consultant, Ilona advises international organisations, national governments, non-government organisations and the private sector on new directions and innovations in health governance for the 21st century.
During a distinguished career with the World Health Organisation, Ilona founded the Healthy Cities project and other world-wide initiatives, and initiated the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. This is a cornerstone of the new public health, placing health as the collective goal of individuals, communities and Governments and as central to the economic development of societies.
Professor Kickbusch says that ‘Health is a public good, a global commons, a global resource’ and her work encapsulates the idea of health being central to our society in an increasing array of personal, social and political spaces.
